After studying law at the University of St. Gallen, Michael Schöll was admitted to the bar of the Canton of Geneva in 2000. He received an LL.M. from Harvard Law School in May 2003 and was admitted to the bar of the State of New York in 2004. He was also awarded a doctorate in law from the University of Basel in 2004.
Before joining the Federal Office of Justice as head of the Private International Law Unit in January 2009, Michael Schöll worked as an attorney at a law firm in Zurich. In January 2012 he was made deputy head of the Private Law Division, and appointed head of the Division in May 2015.
Michael Schöll took over as head of the Federal Office of Justice on 1 September 2021.
